No. 6 - Promise of the Witch King

By RA Salvatore

Started: Jan. 22
Finished: Feb. 1

Notes: I had this book signed by Salvatore about a year ago at a bookstore, and I'm just now getting around to reading it. I've been needing some decent fantasy to get me back into writing again.

Mini review: Not Salvatore's greatest writing, though it has my favorite characters of his. The whole book feels like it's straight out of someone's Dungeons and Dragaon's campaign, which is unusual for Salvatore's work.

  2. Cyn, I'm not familiar with the work. I take it that it's worth checking out?

  3. yes. i only read it once, then made the mistake of donating it because we were remodeling the home. moon made a strong heroine. it's a trilogy, but the deeds of paks includes them all:

  4. Hey Ty!

Sorry I've been lax in the blogging area. My lack of posting on my own and others doesn't mean I'm not reading them, though it is often at work now, and I cannot post from there. So I sent myself an email reminder to come ask you what you thought of Promise?

I don't know if you ever read my review of it, either on my blog or on SFReader, but I wasn't too happy with it.

  5. Hey Jas!
Yes, I read your review a while back, and for the most part I had to agree with it. As much as I hate it when editor's whine about it, this book did indeed read like a night of gaming. There was next to no characterization, and I didn't care for most of the secondary characters, what little I got to know about them.
However, I did like the verbal sparring between Artemis and Jarlaxle.
I'm looking forward to reading "Patriarch" mainly because I like Artemis and Jarlaxle far more than the whiney Drizzt (which doesn't mean I hate Drizzt, just that he goes on and on about the meaning of life, and worrying about his friends, and what to cook for dinner tonight, and which monster to skewer first, and what kind of toilet paper to buy, and did I mention the meaning of life?).

  6. YES! Drizzt used to be sooo cool. (sniff) Sad day when I suddenly realized I couldn't stand reading his diary entries anymore.

I think you'll love Patriarch -- I thought it way better (way better, dude!)

Hope the jobbing and life stuff is going well.
