I really, really, really want to see this movie. It looks as if they've done a decent job of sticking with the original story, and Will Smith can act when the directors is right.
I hadn't heard of this movie until I saw your post. (I know, I know, where have I been?) Anyway, I asked a certain editor about it b/c we like Will Smith, too. The response wasn't as excited as I anticipated...more like same/old Smith role. Let us know if it's any good!
Tam! Thanks for dropping by. Smith is okay, sometimes on and sometimes not, but I'm really more excited that this is being made into a movie. "I Am Legend" is one of my favorite books, and I'm glad the trailers seem to show they're sticking with the plot.
"O“Omega Man’ was a movie very, very loosely based upon the book. In fact, “Omega Man” disgusts me in how little it has to do with the book. If memory serves, Richard Matheson wouldn’t even let them use his name in any connection to “Omega Man.”
And nope, they ain’t zombies, at least not in the original book. They’re vampires. The entire world’s population has been turned into vampires, with the exception of one man.
Sounds implausible (beyond the usual implausibility of much speculative fiction), but the book actually has good, solid science behind its story. Part of that story is the protagonist learning about that science. Of course, we’re talking 1953 science (when the book was first published), so it might not stand up to modern science.
The book is not an action fest, though it has its share of tense scenes. Most of the book is more akin to something like “Robinson Crusoe” or maybe Tom Hank’s “Castaway” movie, with the story being about this one lonely man and how he survives in a world of vampires. The ending, in my opinion, is sheer genius. The book is also short, easily readable in a day or two.
