I'm not the biggest Bruce Springsteen fan in the world, but I like some of his stuff and I really think his early lyrics are some of the strongest blue collar music writing ever laid out. So, here goes ...
Thunder Road
The screen door slams
Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays.
Roy Orbison's singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again.
Don't run back inside, darlin'
you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore.
Show a little faith,
there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty,.
but hey you're alright.
Oh and that's alright with me
You can hide 'neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets.
Well now I'm no hero
That's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair.
Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere.
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh come take my hand
Riding out tonight to case the promised land.
Oh oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road
oh Thunder Road.
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run.
Badlands
Poor man wanna be rich,
rich man wanna be king
And a king ain't satisfied
till he rules everything.
I wanna go out tonight,
I wanna find out what I got.
The River
But I remember us riding in my brother's car
Her body tan and wet down at the reservoir.
At night on them banks I'd lie awake
And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take.
Now those memories come back to haunt me.
They haunt me like a curse.
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true?
Or is it something worse?
Atlantic City
Well now everything dies baby that's a fact
But maybe everything that dies someday comes back.
Put your makeup on
fix your hair up pretty,
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City.
Well I got a job and tried to put my money away
But I got debts that no honest man can pay.
So I drew what I had from the Central Trust
And I bought us two tickets on that Coast City bus.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground.
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
Till you spend half your life just covering up.
This has nothing to do with lyrics, but many have rallied around your post to a certain a--hole on a certain forum. Just wanted you to know people will miss you if you don't return.
ReplyDeleteI, for one, thought you were right on the money.
-- Steve
um, whatd'd I miss?
ReplyDeleteand don't leave Ty - why hurt your friends when we all can just ignore the bozo, whomever he is?
I am, of course, going on the premise that since I don't know anything about this it ain't me :)
Can you just make it easier on me and tell me where to find what I need to find? Pretty please
Jason,
ReplyDeleteIt's at sfreader.com forums. It's a posting Jordan started called "Call for Submissions (Again)" under the "Markets & Contests" header.
Let's just say I had a little explosion, and maybe I shouldn't have.

ReplyDeleteok, I jumped the gun on my previous post. I did figure it was at SFR - and I'm all caught up now. I'm not going to add to that thread at all, but I do hope you remain active there. I mean, at least monitor any threads I post in :)
ReplyDeleteDaniel, Daniel, Daniel. I agree with Steve in that I've learned much from him, or at least learned where/what to look for and his rejections have always given me good input. He does always seem to take the long way around to make a point, though, usually at as many other people's expense as possible and never letting a subject drop.
I wish he could only control those tendencies, as I will miss his input if he really does vacate. But I'll settle for you Ty - any day :)
Uhm... I was just going to say "nice blog" and talk about Springsteen lyrics.
ReplyDeleteAh, what the heck. like the blog. Reading those old Springsteen lyrics makes me remember how good so much of his early stuff was. The River is a particularly poignant look at blue collar life, and Born in the USA will always make me giggle by the way so many people used it as an anthem while wrapping themselves in the flag, not realizing that the message was a little bit, well, on the other side of the spectrum...
JP,
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by, and feel free to do so again anytime.
Good luck on writing that novel this year, btw.
